The Patterns Series by Gary Chaffee are some of the finest drumming education books available. Each book in the series deals with one of the core aspects of drumming, and goes into great depth and detail about it.

With time, patience, dedication, and perhaps a good teacher, these books can really change your playing. In this video, I look at the Sticking Patterns book, taking a simple sticking pattern (a so-called 'compound sticking') and look at the various applications of it.

Understanding that these basic sticking patterns are building blocks enables you to construct your own solos and phrases at will; it is the aim of this video to make that clear, and to demonstrate various exercises and approaches to help with this.

How to apply Gary Chaffees sticking patterns lesson #1

This is the first in a short series of lessons on how to apply the patterns described in the Gary Chaffee Sticking Patterns book in a more musical way. This lesson demonstrates how a single bar accent pattern (using the 3 part of a 3-2 Son Clave) can be played using a number of different sticking patterns.
